From over the hills
And far away
Your spirit calls me
Every day
"All my life's buried here, heap earth upon it"
From over the hills
And far away
Your spirit calls me
Every day
You’d think I’d know
This route by now
As I’ve travelled it
So many times
Yet I always see
Something new to me
As I traverse
These railway lines
I saw it first
On TV
In a film made long ago
(If you can forgive
Their dodgy accents
It’s not that bad, you know)
There it stood
Pride of place
As part of that iconic scene
A symbol of majesty
And resilience
In a landscape stoically serene
Who knew
That its destruction
Would be so upsetting to me
It’s not like it was
A person
But a 300 year old tree
Every twist and turn
Each up and down
All tell a different story
There really is nothing
To rival these roads
In all their majestic glory
